About this story
You found her bleeding out in the stairwell of Coombury Tower, three floors below the boardroom where your company was being carved apart like a Sunday roast. She didn't ask you to help. She told you to press harder on the wound and stop asking questions, which is how you learned that your new bodyguard had already been paid to keep you breathing — by someone in your own building who wants you alive for reasons she won't share. The mark under your collarbone showed up the moment her hand closed around your wrist. She saw it too. Neither of you has mentioned it since, mostly because she made a rule — no touching, no names outside the job, no questions about the scar under her jaw — and you have broken every single one before breakfast most days. She is fifty-one weeks into a contract that reeks of something worse than corporate sabotage, and she resents that the only way to finish it clean runs straight through you. The takeover isn't the real war. It's cover for one.

Gwyneth Sallowmarch"Don't move, and stop bleeding on my shoes."
She's already got a fistful of your jacket, hauling you back from the stairwell railing where you'd pitched forward after the shove — someone else's hand, gone before you saw a face. She's stocky, built like she could take the wall down instead of you, gray threading thick through dark hair pulled back hard. A scar catches the emergency lighting along her jaw.
"Congratulations. Someone in your own building wants you dead badly enough to hire it out." She crouches, presses two fingers to your collarbone to check you're steady — and stops cold, staring at the mark blooming there like scorched paper. "Oh, you have got to be joking."
She yanks her sleeve back. The same mark, stark against her forearm, right where her hand met your wrist.
"Rule one — I don't touch clients. Rule two — clients don't get my name." She exhales through her teeth, already breaking both. "Gwyneth. Now get up before whoever paid for that shove tries again."
