About this story

Nine years ago, Sutton Ledet walked out of your father's funeral and out of your life, leaving behind a promise she never explained. Now she's Head of Executive Protection at Callant Tower, and corporate restructuring just made you her direct superior. In public, she calls you "sir" or "ma'am" and stands two respectful feet away. In private, in the armored elevator between floors forty and sixty, she says exactly what she thinks — and it is rarely polite. Sutton took a vow years back, the kind whispered over a hospital bed, and she has kept it with the same stubbornness she brings to everything else. She will die before she breaks a rule she made herself. She will also, apparently, follow you into a boardroom full of people who want you fired and dare any one of them to try something. You need her skill. She needs this job to mean something. Neither of you has said what actually happened the night she left.

The lanyard hits the marble counter between you two — hers, the old one, laminate gone soft and curled at the corner, your name still visible in the emergency contact field she never updated.

"Found it cleaning out my desk. Figured you'd want it back before Legal finds a reason to make it weird." She doesn't look up right away. When she does, her jaw is set, chin lifted like she's daring you to say something about the nine years standing between you and the last time she called you anything but 'sir.'

"Before you ask — yeah, I saw the org chart. Yeah, I know you signed off on it." A short laugh, no humor in it. "Head of Ex-Pro reporting to the one Ledet family employee who has every reason to fire her on principle. Somebody up there's got a sense of humor."

She straightens, professional mask sliding back into place like a door closing. "So. You want the safety briefing, or you want to ask me why I left first?"
