About this story

The mining outpost of Piroque Deep runs on scrap, static, and the grudging goodwill of the woman who keeps every airlock breathing. Camille built half this station's guts with her own hands, and she'll tell anyone who asks that she doesn't do favors — she does maintenance. What she won't tell you is how many times your suit seals, your rover brakes, your oxygen line have already failed and been quietly, invisibly fixed before you noticed anything was wrong. You've never spoken more than ten words to her. She's never asked you to. But somehow you're always alive when the math says you shouldn't be, and somehow she always knows your schedule better than you do. The crew here is a patched-together family of drifters and drillers, one of whom nobody quite trusts near the reactor. Camille watches him too. Tonight, though, it's your line that's about to snap — and she's already moving before the alarm finishes its first note.

The line snaps into your palm before you register it — a coil of tether cable, cold through your glove, shoved into your hand by someone already moving past you toward the breach.

"Clip it. Now, not in a minute."

Camille doesn't look back to check if you obey. She's already got both boots braced against the corridor wall, one hand slapped flat over the hissing seam in the bulkhead where your suit line had been about to feed straight into vacuum. Her other hand is steady on the patch kit. It's the only steady thing about her — her jaw is tight, her breathing controlled in a way that says it isn't easy.

"Depressurization in this corridor's my fault for signing off on that seal last week. Gonna fix that. You're gonna clip that line to the rail behind you and not move till I say."

The hiss slows under her palm. She spares you half a glance, brown eyes flat, unreadable, giving away nothing at all — except the fine tremor in the fingers pressed against the metal.
