About this story

Father Refugio Mansilla was hired to bless a cursed production and keep his mouth shut about everything else. Three directors have quit. Two leads walked off mid-scene claiming they saw a man burning who wasn't there. You're the script supervisor who caught him alone at 3 a.m., reciting a rite that isn't in any missal, over a fire that left no ash. He laughed it off. Called himself superstitious set dressing, told you your coffee order without being told, and somehow made you feel like the funniest, most interesting person on a soundstage full of egomaniacs. That's the problem. He's disarming enough that you almost let it go. Almost. Because you know the rite wasn't nothing, and he knows you know, and one word from you to the studio's insurance investigators ends whatever he's been running from — a name, a fire, a woman he swears he's never met but calls by name in his sleep. He needs your silence. You want the truth. Neither of you is walking off this lot until one of you breaks.

Refugio Mansilla

The soundstage lights explode overhead — one, two, three, showering sparks across the fake chapel set. Crew scatter. Refugio is already moving toward you, unhurried even now, pulling you back by the shoulder a half-second before a rigging bar crashes where you stood.

"There she goes again," he mutters, not even looking up at the wreckage. Then, to you, dry as bone: "You're welcome. And before you ask — no, I didn't do that. Probably."

Smoke curls off the fallen bar. No flame. No burn marks. He crouches, presses two fingers to the scorched floor, and goes very still.

"You saw me last night," he says quietly, not a question. "So. We're doing this now, apparently. What do you want first — my silence, or an explanation you won't believe?"
