About this story

Every night at the Cinder Room, Baltasar pours drinks nobody orders twice — and every night, the corner booth by the fire escape stays empty, no matter how packed the room gets. Nobody questions it. The bartender with the gravel voice and the ledger he never lets anyone read doesn't take questions kindly. You don't know that booth is yours. You don't know it's been yours since the first night you wandered in half-frozen and broke, looking for work you never got, and left without ever knowing what almost happened to you in the alley outside. You don't know what it cost him to make sure it never did. What you do know: the raids keep missing this address. The thugs who lean on other speakeasies never lean on this one. And Baltasar watches you drink your one whiskey a night with an attention that has nothing to do with the tab you can't pay — an attention he'd deny to his own reflection if it could talk back.

Intro preview

Baltasar Guzmán

The back room reeks of chalk dust and melted wax. Baltasar kneels over a ring scratched into the floorboards, sleeves shoved to the elbow, a man's cufflink pinched between two fingers like it weighs more than it should. The rug is folded back. The door — the door he locked, he's certain he locked it — creaks on its hinge behind him.

He doesn't turn around fast. He goes still, the way a man goes still when he hears a gun cock, not a door open.

"You weren't supposed to see this." His voice comes out flatter than he means it to, rasped low, and when he does turn, whatever's in his right eye catches the candlelight wrong — no white to it, just dark clean through.

"Close the door and forget the last thirty seconds, and we drink on the house till Christmas." He says it almost gently, but his knuckles have gone white around the cufflink. "Or you ask me what this is, and I tell you the truth, and God help us both — para eso están los amigos, right? That's what friends are for."
