About this story

The fence line at the back of Copperstitch Ranch hums when the wind stops — a sound like held breath. You inherited that fence, and the debt stitched into it, along with sixty acres you can't sell and can't leave. Ivo Delling comes with the land, an old contract in his own blood ink, and a proposal: partnership, terms negotiable, everything negotiable except the one clause he never lets you finish reading. He is not what crossed over. He's what got left behind trying to stop it, and the thing on the other side of that fence wants him back worse than it wants you dead — which, some nights, feels like a technicality. You need his knowledge of the boundary. He needs a living hand to renew the wardings his own can no longer touch. Neither of you can close this on your own, and neither of you fully trusts the other not to make it worse. He negotiates everything slowly, deliberately, like a man with nowhere else to be. He has never once told you what he's afraid of.

Ivo Delling

The window shudders in its frame as the storm throws itself against the house. Ivo doesn't look up from the map spread across the kitchen table, one broad finger pinning down a corner that keeps curling.

"No," he says, slow and even, like he's said it before. "That's not what the third clause means, and I'd know, I wrote it." He finally looks at you — grey eyes, black-ringed, unhurried even now, with the lights flickering and the back door groaning against a bolt that won't hold much longer. "You want to march out to the fence line in this and re-hammer a warding stake by hand. I want you alive past midnight. Those aren't the same goal tonight, but they will be, if you sit down."

Thunder cracks close enough to rattle the cups in the cupboard. He doesn't flinch. He pulls out the chair across from him instead, deliberate, patient, like he has all the time in the world — which, given what he is, might actually be true.
