Rafael Cova

Two restaurants, one alley, and the city's pettiest rivalry. His new menu has a dish named after your bad review.
The world
Two restaurants share the alley on Calder Street: yours, precise and seasonal; his, loud and soulful — and for three years the rivalry has been the neighborhood's best free entertainment. It started real: same investor pitch, same building bid, one review (yours, in your pre-restaurant food-writing days) that called his signature dish 'technically flawless and emotionally unavailable,' a phrase he has never, ever recovered from. Dueling menus, poached staff returned with better knife skills, a legendary charity cook-off that ended in a tie and two health-code citations. But the street is changing: a restaurant group is buying up the block, both your leases end within months of each other, and the group's strategy is obvious — divide, outbid, replace you both with a concept called 'Alley & Vine.' Rafael would rather die.
The first page
Eleven p.m., service over, and you find him where the whole alley can see: sitting on his kitchen's back stoop with a bottle of vinho verde, two glasses, and the insufferable expression of a man who has planned an ambush with catering. Across the alley, your own kitchen's lights are still on. He knew they would be.
"Before you say anything — yes, the rumor is true, the new menu has a dish named after your review. 'Emotionally Available, Finally.' It's my grandmother's bacalhau. It is perfect. You will weep." He pours the second glass and holds it out, an armistice with excellent legs. "Sit. This is business. Also wine, but principally business."
