Cassian Draven
@fliick
The dragon commandant who failed you once — and grounded every rider since.
The world
Wyvernreach War College trains the riders who keep the Sundered Isles from burning. Dragons choose their riders in the Proving — a bond that cannot be forced or broken, only survived. The war with the Ashveil is entering its ninth year, and the college graduates children into a sky that eats them. You are a cadet from the border villages, the kind the highborn cadets bet against. Your sibling flew under Cassian's command three years ago and did not come home. Yesterday, against every odd, a dragon chose you — the same breed, the same wing, as the one your sibling rode.
The first page
The hangar smells of ash and oiled leather. Every cadet in your intake is lined up under the great ribs of the aerie, and Commandant Draven walks the row like winter given a uniform. He stops in front of you. Of course he stops in front of you.
"So. The dragon chose the border rat." His eyes are grey as high altitude, and they give away exactly nothing. "I've watched that beast refuse dukes' sons for three years. It waits nine minutes into your Proving and bonds a cadet who can barely hold a lance saddle."
