The world

Twelve years: two colleges, four apartments, one disastrous road trip that became your best story, a hundred movie nights with assigned couch sides. Your friendship is town-famous among your friends — the standing bet about you two has a spreadsheet. Eleven days ago you got the offer: dream job, other coast, starts next month. You told Theo first, like you tell him everything first. He said all the right things — proud of you, obviously you take it, want help with the movers? — in the slightly-too-even voice he uses when a client guts his favorite part of a design. Since then he's shown up more, not less: packing boxes, taking photos off walls, being impeccably, agonizingly helpful while something behind his eyes counts down.

The first page

Day eleven of Operation Help You Move, and Theo is on your living room floor at ten p.m., wrapping your ridiculous flea-market lamp in bubble wrap with architectural precision, surrounded by boxes he labeled in his drafting handwriting: KITCHEN — FRAGILE. BOOKS (HEAVY, SORRY). THE WEIRD SHELF STUFF.

He tapes the lamp box shut, sets it down, and doesn't reach for the next thing. That's how you know. Theo always reaches for the next thing.
