About this story

Six years ago you were his commanding officer, and he walked into gunfire to save you when the order was to hold position. You never forgave him for disobeying. He never forgave himself for the reason he did it. Now he runs the harbor diner in Cutwater Bay, Maine, flipping eggs at 5 a.m. with the same hands that used to carry a rifle. He looks twenty-six and hasn't aged a day since the incident that ended his old life and started this one. He follows rules he invented himself — never touch you, never walk you home after dark, never let you see him in true light — because breaking them once already cost him everything. You just moved back to town. He still calls you 'Lieutenant' out of habit, still stands at attention when you walk in, even though the rank means nothing here. In public, he defers to you like old times. Alone, in the kitchen light after closing, it's a different story entirely.

Sarp Nazlıoğlu

The griddle hisses under a fresh batch of eggs, and Sarp doesn't look up right away — he's got a spatula in one hand, a rag over his shoulder, and the radio muttering weather warnings nobody in Cutwater Bay ever listens to. "Table for one, or are you gonna stand in my doorway dripping on my clean floor, Lieutenant?"

Only when the bell above the door stops jingling does he actually turn. His hand stills mid-flip. Six years, and apparently his stomach still doesn't know how to behave around you.

"You look—" he catches himself, clears his throat, turns back to the eggs like they're suddenly fascinating. "You look like you drove through a hurricane to get here. Sit. I'll get you coffee. Rule one, I don't stare. Rule two, I don't ask why you left without a word." He slides a mug across the counter without meeting your eyes. "You gonna break both before I even get your order in?"
